CD Album Cover

Use a combination of photography and graphics to redesign a CD album cover. Incorporate type into your final design. You should aim to improve the appeal of the cover. Provide the original cover for comparison.

CD Cover

Redesigned CoverUnfortunately with the original cover I had to edit as I could not find the rear of it, I took the original image and flipped it making it a symmetrical image, added the track listings , bar-code and the record label to the cover, gave it a centre spine and added text to this also, I chose this album as I found it really boring and not pleasing to the eye in the least, it almost looks pop art with the cartoon style empty road which is repeated several times, I ventured out with my Nikon D5300 with my 18-55mm stock lens attached,  my f-stop set to f16, my ISO was set at 100 and the shutter was set to stay open for 25 seconds in order to collect as many light trails as possible.

I think this redesigned cover gives more shelf appeal bearing in mind the name of the artist and the album title over the original one, I have tried to make this alternate cover look as realistic as anything you may see in the stores by adding a centre spine with the album name and artist shown, the image was taken around 8pm on the bridge over the A55 towards Chester, this is why the length of the shutter was so long.

Book Cover

Brief: Select a book or journal. Consider the nature of its content / subject matter, then design and create a cover image through photography that captures the essence of it. This assignment demands lateral thinking about your image, rather than a literal solution. Use sketches and reference to help you arrive at a solution. The title or main typography of the book or journal must be incorporated into your final image. It is therefore important to consider this before taking your picture.

Redesigned Cover

The Book Cover I chose is one of a story about a woman’s memoirs about Auschwitz  concentration camp in Poland, the original cover looks in my opinion to be drab and boring almost, the images used for the redesigned cover were taken by myself whilst visiting Auschwitz II Birkenau, my opinion is that the images I used, send you to the place where the book is referring to, a more appealing look on the cover, it immediately draws you in to the story, personally if I were to purchase this book and saw it in the book shop with the original cover I would not give it a second look, however if it was using my images then I would definitely pick the book up to investigate further. The alternate book cover consists of 2 images, the first one is from about 500 metres inside the compound looking back towards the entrance to the camp, the 2nd one was  from the entrance looking down the railway tracks towards the disembarking point for the prisoners, I added a foreword on the back of the cover to make it look lore realistic along with the logos for the publishing company.

I decided to go with monochrome as this made the images look more striking, I don’t think it had the same effect in colour, equipment used was a Nikon d5300 with the stock 18-55mm lens ISO was set at 200 with the shutter spped at 1/250th of a second.

Event (Glyndwr Men’s v Liverpool Hope)

Produce a documentary mini portfolio of an event. This should be over a one or two day shoot and tackled as a professional assignment. Produce at least ten / twenty images that capture the essence of the event. Although the images may be of the same place or subject, use a range of shots, CU, MS, LS, to tell the story of what went on. Check the local newspaper for events that are happening near you that will provide good subject matter.

The Event I chose was one that I attended on behalf of Glyndwr University Sports of which I am one of the photographers that document the fixtures on a weekly basis.

The above images are from a recent fixture between Wrexham Glyndwr men’s 1st against Liverpool Hope University at Wrexham FC’s training ground, Colliers Park, Gresford.

A range of shots were captured during this 1 day shoot, the weather was excellent but cold, a wide range of shots were captured during this close ups, long shots etc, this was a task that I thoroughly enjoyed doing as this is the type of photography I am leaning towards, at the end of my university time I hope to be doing this on a full time basis. The equipment used was both my Nikon cameras, a d3200 and a d5300, one was fit with the 18-55mm stock lens whilst the other had the 70-300 Sigma zoom, the shutter speed was set at approximately 1/2000th of a second with the ISO set 200, quite pleased with the outcome of these shots as I am still in my infancy with regards to sports photography.

Elegance of Decay / Broken Grandeur

Interpret this photographically producing a mini portfolio of six images. They can be interior or exterior. There is beauty in age, especially under the right lighting conditions. This might be derelict spaces, objects showing signs of age, or the natural deterioration in something.

Above are the final six images for my interpretation of elegance of decay / broken grandeur, the images were all taken at Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland while myself and a few fellow students were visiting in February 2017, whilst the majority of people would not class these images as grandeur, they were viewed as being impressive by the people that built them and also by the people that wanted them built, images one, two and three were taken at Auschwitz #1 this is where hundreds of thousands of innocent men, women and children were held captive whilst awaiting the inevitable, although these buildings have been preserved for the public to visit and pay their respects they are still images of a stark reminder of the cruelty of a nation at that time. Image #4 is from inside one of the buildings which I have already mentioned, it shows a room where prisoners would be subjected to hours , sometimes days of torture in the tiny holes that they were made to crawl into, the ‘holes’ were just big enough for a person to stand up in, not big enough to sit or squat and they were left for what must of felt like an eternity for them, the wall you can see in image four is showing the viewer how big the space was for the individual to endure, each of these little doors houses one of these ‘rooms’ for want of a better word for the prisoner to stay.Image #5 is from Auschwitz #2 (Birkenau) showing one of the ‘billets’ that hundreds of prisoner would be housed where they would be subject to work and ultimately death. The final image is one of the actual carriages that the prisoners would be transported from Auschwitz  1 to Auschwitz 2, this is as far as i know the last remaining train carriage in existence. The equipment used was a Nikon d5300 with the stock 18-55mm lens, ISO was set around 400 with a shutter speed of 1/250th.

ARD517 Practice in Context

Advertising Campaign Diary

Going to approach Costa Coffee on Island Green to see if it would be possible to film for a short while inside the store, documenting how they make a coffee, the coffee that is made will be a latte, my choice of drink and will obviously be made for myself in a take away cup.

All video will be shot from the customer side of the counter, hopefully the barista will be compliant and will not object to being on film, if this is the case I only need to be able to see the coffee being prepared so a neck down shot would suffice for the video.

The access to the store is very good, there is a large car park to the front, inside the counter is situated on the left-hand side with seating to the right, at the back of the store is where the toilets are situated.

  • Wide shot of sign on the store front
  • Cut to opening of door and approach to the counter
  • Close up of coffee being deposited into strainer
  • Moving shot to strainer being placed onto brewing holder
  • Snap shot to cup being placed
  • Close up of brewed coffee emptying into cup
  • Close up of milk being heated
  • Mid shot of milk being poured into cup
  • Mid shot of coffee being poured into milk
  • Close up of drink being placed for customer to collect

Awaiting a phone call from the Island ~Green Costa, approached them this morning (13/12/2016) with a view to obtaining some footage via filming in the store, Barista that was working said the she thinks that it wouldn’t be a problem as they had some primary school children in taking photographs for a project they were doing in school, left my contact details for him to contact me then hopefully I can continue with the advertising campaign.

Production and Post Production:

Finished my second poster for the advertising campaign, happy with the overall look of both posters, just a case of waiting for that phone call to arrange a date to go in and get my footage.

I finally received a phone call to confirm permission for me to go ahead and film inside the store early one morning in order to get the footage needed for my brief.

I arrived at Costa coffee on Island Green at 6:50 AM, and with my tripod, my Nikon D5300, my Nikon D3200 and two 18 x 55 mm stock lenses.

I succeeded in obtaining all the shots I needed to make my advertising video and proceeded to upload it to my computer, unfortunately, all the footage was unusable, it just didn’t look right, it didn’t look professional enough, so I am going to have to have another early morning filming, this time I think I will just use my phone it is the Galaxy S6 edge which is equipped with a 20-megapixel rear reviewing camera, and possibly even use the go pro. I am more than confident of obtaining good footage this time once I have good enough footage I can proceed to get the files into Adobe after effects and continue with the assignment.

Finally got more footage from the store of the barista making a coffee, this time I used my galaxy s6 edge and achieved the shots I wanted although it didn’t come out entirely as I wanted but I think it is good enough, I edited the footage so that it looked like there were several shots of the barista working, in actual fact it was one continuous shot but how I have done it the end product looks acceptable, between the shots I used a cross fade effect to make the transition look smoother, I adjusted the brightness to smooth the overall look, added some music instead of the background noise that was present, the second video I used existing photographs that I acquired from the internet, resized all the images so they looked uniform, used a wipe transition which makes it look half decent, hopefully this fits the brief and has done what was asked.
